Hey, Do-ers! Instead of a DIY project, today I want to share with you my plans, hopes, and dreams for the summer. I will try to categorize things so you can skim to the ones that are of interest to you!
Role Playing Games
This summer I am building a Dungeons and Dragons campaign from scratch for my youngest and his friend. To my disappointment, they didn’t want to switch from 5e to something more fun for me, like Worlds Without Numbers. Nevertheless, I am designing a sandbox style hex crawl for them using D&D 5e. Thankfully I have a lot of tools, mostly rather old school, at my disposal. It should be fun to see how they interact with my creation!
For the dreams part, I would love to find a group of peers to play with. I would even be willing to run the games. One day, maybe!
Gardening
This year I have tried planting by the lunar calendar, or as I call it, planting by the moon. So far, things seem to be going well, and growing. I hope that I get a nice yield this year. Fingers Crossed!
We are also going to strip the grass off our front yard, adding some hardscape, perennials and flowers. I am hoping to add more medicinal and food plants, as long as I can keep it looking attractive enough for the neighbors!
Sewing
I want to pick up sewing again. I really enjoy it, and the cost of fabric when compared to ready to wear clothing is starting to come back down in price, enough so that it feels worthwhile. I also want more natural fiber clothing, so the difference in cost there is even more pronounced. I am planning on starting with some linen shorts. I would also like to learn more about drafting patterns, so I can have clothes that fit.
Reading
I have spent the last few years reading rather studiously. Books about philosophy, medicine, herbalism, church history, etc. I think I burned myself out a bit. I have found myself returning to fiction, mostly fantasy. I have not found too many new authors I can read without throwing the book aside, because it sucks. So, I am reading through old favorites and older authors. It’s been a lot of fun and a nice change of pace. I am thinking of throwing a few classics in the mix for good measure.
Food
My goal this summer is to learn to make a killer meat pie. There’s an Australian style meat pie place in town, the pies they make are so good. I want to master the crust so I can make my own. I am fairly confident of my abilities to make killer filling already.
I have also set a challenge for myself to use scraps when possible this summer. Today I took strawberry tops and covered them with raw honey to make a strawberry honey/syrup, for example. I already do this normally, but I want to stretch myself and see how creative I can get.
Health
Now this category is a challenge. The menopause fairy came and worked me over. I am having to figure out a whole new way of being. I am almost to the post menopausal stage now, but I am still trying to figure out what works so I can feel my best and be healthy. God willing, I am in great shape for chasing around grandbabies! Changes in diet, exercise, and mental outlook are all in order. I am going to spend quite a bit of my summer really locking in on figuring this out.
Whimsy
I’ve been far too hard on myself when it comes to my love of the fantastical. I told myself that I needed to grow up, and in some regards, of course I needed to. But I sacrificed some of the things that brought me joy, thinking at the time it was necessary. Now that I am in my fifties, I am bringing this part of me back and giving her some love. I am too old to ignore the things that bring me joy! I love dreaming of castles, and adventures, and Hobbit parties! I am not sure where it will take me, but I am determined to enjoy the journey will my whole heart!

That menopause fairy is a pill, isn’t she? I’m 10+ years beyond it myself, and so far I haven’t experienced too many negative effects. I hope you’ll have a similar experience. My “summer” plans are more like “retirement” plans, so I have a little more time to expand into them, but I have a lot of the same goals, especially reading and sewing. I also want to get more into canning and fermentation. Have an awesome summer!
Stubborn weight gain, stiff joints, and energy levels are my top struggles. The hot flashes are just about done, thank God! I love how easy and tasty fermenting can be! I hope you are able to ease into retirement!
