I recently purchased a used copy of this book:

What I like about this book, is that it not only gives you a lot of recipes to try, it also gives you a base recipe. One where you can add your own ingredients and scents, to make it what you want. I recommend this book to all you DIY-ers out there.
Today I am sharing my experience with making wax melts from this book. It was a super easy and fun project, and made a perfect gift for a very special lady.

Allow me to introduce you to one of the hardest working members of my household, Smelly Dragon.
She is in charge of keeping my main floor bathroom, that also houses my laundry room and cat litter box, smelling pleasant. It is a difficult task, one she takes with sacred seriousness. So, I wanted to give her a way to do her sacred duty, without as many questionable ingredients, thereby keeping the air scented, but not laden with mysterious toxic chemicals.
Here’s how I did it:
I added all my ingredients, minus the essential oils to a quart sized mason jar. This is somewhat against the instructions in the book. For the best color, you will want to infuse the coconut oil first, as per instructions. I just didn’t care that much for a first trial.

Once everything was melted, I removed the quart jar from the pan and added the essential oils. I chose a combo of peppermint, and tea tree, because it smells clean and refreshing. I measured out 7 grams of essential oils, and stirred them into the melted oil and wax.

I decided to use these tiny molds I bought to shape my wax melts. I used the dropped that came with my molds to fill them.

I put the molds on a cookie sheet and stuck them in my refrigerator for a few hours to harden. The book tells us to give the molds a few days to harden. I didn’t feel like waiting that long, and S.D. was getting impatient.

I chose to store my wax melts in some snack sized ziploc bags. I keep them in the refrigerator, because my house can get warm enough to make them clump together.

Time to give some to Smelly, and see if they meet with her approval!

Final verdict: Smelly Dragon approved!
The scent is a little more subtle than the commercially produced ones. But it is still strong enough to scent the room. I like knowing what’s in the wax melt, and it is also way less expensive than the ones from the store. I find them to be long lasting. I have been able to use one set of melts for multiple weeks before needing to add a new set. I recommend this project! It is fun, quick, and simple!
It also keeps Smelly happy. She can be a little too serious about her job sometimes!

Thanks for stopping by, lovely human! Please let me know if you make your own wax melts in the comments. See you again soon!
