De-mystifying DIY (Part 1)

Making something yourself, can seem intimidating. In this series, I hope to break things down into easy pieces that will help you not only feel more confident to start, but have a good framework to use when you choose your next project.

To start, let’s make a list of the skills you already possess. I think you will be surprised at all the things you know how to do! This list needs to be exhaustive, to the point of silliness.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about:

Skills I have or things I know how to do:

  • I can cut with scissors
  • I can glue and use a glue gun
  • I can sew
  • I can make a sandwich, including hot sandwiches
  • I can bake bread
  • I can run a vacuum
  • I can use a knife
  • I can walk and chew gum at the same time

Your list will seem funny at first, but impressive in it’s length, right? Once you think you have exhausted all possibilities, take another look at your list. This time I want you to look at what you can do. All of those things are mini-DIYS. They are also the building blocks for bigger DIY projects. Think about things like using a paintbrush, or a ruler; those skills can apply to a ton of DIY projects. You are already capable of so many things, you can make something special for yourself!

Keep your list handy. It is part of your toolkit for your next project. And when you are feeling down, pull out your list look at all the amazing things you can do. I would love to see your lists or hear about what you discovered about yourself and your skills. Leave a comment below or reach out to me through the contact form. You can already do amazing things!
